English 113-102-Blog 3, "Sweeney Todd"

Sweeney Todd was bit boring for a dark comedy. Why? There was a lot of blood and gore but the blood looked way too fake and the comedy must have been way over my head.  The town is always gloomy and depressing so the mood is set to a more serious emotion.  Toby the servant has a very smart attic atitude and is funny when spoken to.  Toby's confession to Mrs. Lovett was hilarious a child telling a women his love for her.  Toby is very bold and courageous for doing such a thing to a women.

The interesting thing is the connection between Arsenic and Old Lace.  Especially the trunk in Arsenic and Old Lace and the trunk in Sweeney Todd are very a like.  To support this,  in both films a dead body ends up in the trunk.  Considering both are dark comedy, I have a feeling the director might have studied the film Arsenic and Old Lace.

The irony I like was the death of Sweeney Todd being killed by the very blades he called friend and Mrs. Lovett being burned to death by her oven that was used to cook her meat pies.  Also Toby, the frightened little boy, who kill Mr. Todd with a cold blood face made the boy colder than ice(no sympathy for his action).

English 113-102-Drama Blog 2, "A Midsummernights Dream"

Shakespeare's play, A Midsummernights Dream is better in the text than the Hollywood version.  I imagine the characters and actions clearer than what the movie portraits the characters.  There was a rumor that some of Shakespeare's play was based on his feelings for his stable boy.  It bugs me that there is a possibility it could be pretty sick to think about a stable boy but overall his plays' are super awsome and has been studied through out the world.

I pictured all the characters in Togas and half naked.  In the film they are very covered only till they where sleeping next to each other which was pretty AWSOME!  Although the girls in the film didn't fully show much it was still hot.  I was not a fan of seeing half naked men in the film but in the text I imagined them to be godly with their beauty and looks.

I think the translated script was better than film and would prefer to read the play than the movie.  The ability to use my imagination is better than having Hollywood create the image of the characters for the audience.  In reality, the job is sometime difficult for a director to recreate the character of a play or a novel.

English 113-102-Drama Formal Blog, "Arsenic and Old Lace." Ze Vue

Arsenic and Old Lace(A&OL) is an enjoyable movie.  The color is in black and white, and did not bother me, because the graphics with the audio is clear.  A&OL have lots of sarcasm and irony making A&OL more interesting.  The movie was a comedy which gives it thumbs up because everyone likes a good laugh when watching a movie. The film was greatly pieced together allowing the audience to appreciate the humor of the film.  I noticed the movie in black and white giving me the impression that the movie was no good.  My wrong assumption got the best of me and i could have lost the opportunity to watch a great film.
A&OL would be a favorite black and white film of mine considering I haven't watched a black and white film since the early 1990's.  I thought it was funny how Mortimer tried so hard to get rid of the the dead old man killed by his aunt and later found a different dead body in it's place right after Teddy was just finished getting rid of the old man.  It was ironic that Mortimer's brother happened to have another dead body to fit the cellar, but it happened to be able to place it in the trunk.
In regards to the trunk in A&OL, the film Sweeney Todd, also had a trunk containing a dead body.  The two plays connects very well in many ways given the facts that they are both dark comedy, containing lots of irony, and sarcasm.  Although the theme of Sweeney Todd was based on a revenge there was still room for humor.  To support this, when Toby was mentioning how delicious the meat pies were gave me a nice cruel laughter of Toby not knowing what he is eating makes me laugh.
A&OL  might be written just for a good laugh or a moral point was behind the whole movie.  It could've been a psychological perspective view on a typical family in reality no family is perfect.  A&OL lesson of a perfect family could have been a lesson being exemplified through out the film at the same time making the film enjoyable.
Overall the film was funny and is going to be one of my ancient black and white favorites film of the old age.
